Modern humans and Neanderthals may have shared more than land and genes. They may have also shared culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern humans and Neanderthals may have shared more than territory, tools, and genes. New evidence from a cave in southern T\u00fcrkiye suggests the two groups may also have exchanged ideas and developed similar symbolic traditions over thousands of years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discovery comes from \u00dc\u00e7a\u011f\u0131zl\u0131 II Cave, a site near one of the most important migration routes in human history. The Levant connected Africa with Eurasia, making it a natural passage for Homo sapiens<\/em> leaving Africa and a likely meeting ground with Neanderthals already living farther north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six royal mummies once considered lost resurfaced in 2020, giving researchers a new opportunity to examine five ancient Egyptian princesses and King Hor. The women included four sisters, Khenmet, Itaweret, Ita, and Sathathormeryt, along with Princess Noub-Hotep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their tombs contained bows, arrows, daggers, and other weapons, but without a modern bioarchaeological examination, researchers could not determine whether these objects were ceremonial or reflected skills the princesses had practiced. After a musket ball destroyed his left forearm during the War of 1812, Shadrack Byfield retrieved the amputated limb from a refuse pile and buried it himself. He later designed a prosthetic device that helped him return to weaving, but newly uncovered records show that survival after war brought decades of pain, financial hardship and conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Byfield appears regularly in American and Canadian documentaries, books and museum exhibits, where he has often been portrayed as a dutiful British soldier who endured disability without complaint. A 1.4-million-year-old trail of footprints reveals that a powerful human relative grew nearly as large as us and may have traveled in all-male groups.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eight individuals walked across the wet ground beside an ancient Kenyan lake. Within a short time, sediment buried their footprints and preserved a scene that would remain hidden for roughly 1.4 million years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tracks offer something bones rarely can: evidence of several extinct human relatives moving through the same place at nearly the same moment. Researchers believe the footprints were left by a group of Paranthropus boisei<\/em>, a powerful-jawed hominin that lived alongside early members of the human genus but ultimately disappeared without leaving descendants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
