Keels<\/a>, author of <a href=\"https:\/\/tupress.temple.edu\/books\/sesqui\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Sesqui! While best known as the backdrop to American political power, the grounds have doubled as high-stakes playing fields and performance spaces for over a century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From \u201cscandalous\u201d pop concerts to full-scale youth baseball diamonds, the South Lawn has frequently been dug up, relined and reinvented in the name of recreation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Family-Friendly Fun: <\/strong>In 1801, President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/articles\/thomas-jefferson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thomas Jefferson<\/a> opened the White House lawn for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehousehistory.org\/the-first-fourth-of-july-celebration-at-the-presidents-house\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first major holiday celebration<\/a> at the executive mansion. It wasn\u2019t placed beside the body but <a href=\"https:\/\/scitechdaily.com\/first-of-its-kind-discovery-homers-iliad-found-embedded-in-a-1600-year-old-egyptian-mummy\/\">inside the mummy\u2019s abdomen<\/a>. But the real surprise isn\u2019t just where the fragment was found. It\u2019s how it got there. The steel case was dented, and each folded page was punctured with two round holes. The cause of the damage was a bullet, which was now lodged inside the 26th president\u2019s chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFriends, I shall ask you to be as quiet as possible,\u201d Roosevelt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theodoreroosevelt.org\/content.aspx?page_id=22&amp;club_id=991271&amp;module_id=338394\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told the crowd<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former president reached inside his vest and removed the 50-page manuscript, holding it up before his audience. The papers, he explained, had slowed the bullet, which broke one of his ribs. But it hadn\u2019t hit any vital organs, instead stopping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theodorerooseveltcenter.org\/encyclopedia\/law-and-justice\/john-schrank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">near his right lung<\/a>. \u201cThe bullet is in me now, so that I cannot make a very long speech,\u201d he said, \u201cbut I will try my best.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/history-presidential-assassination-attempts-andrew-jackson-teddy-roosevelt-180984708\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">assassination attempt<\/a> took place just weeks before the presidential election.
