Citing time concerns, Georgia Republicans rejected Governor Kemp’s call to redraw congressional and legislative districts ahead of the 2028 election cycle. The redistricting plan came after an April Supreme Court decision weakened the Voting Rights Act, saying racially gerrymandered districts are unconstitutional. House Speaker Jon Burns (R-GA) announced the decision following a special session on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the AP<\/a>, Burns said he wanted time to understand how race can and cannot be used according to the ruling in Louisiana v. Callais<\/em>, which ruled against a racially gerrymandered district in Louisiana. He said a full understanding of the ramifications is necessary for redistricting, and he is more focused on economic issues than playing “partisan games.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When the House learned that it was placed on the call for a special session, we knew it was not the right path forward for our state at this time. We believe that it is important to do things the Georgia way \u2014 responsibly, transparently, and with ample opportunity for public input,\u201d said House Speaker Jon Burns in a presser at the state Capitol. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., was confronted Monday morning over high gas prices<\/a> under the Biden administration when criticizing President Donald Trump over “skyrocketing gas prices.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeffries remarked on gas prices while discussing Trump’s peace deal with Iran after months of war and hostilities on “Good Day New York<\/a>.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It was a reckless war of choice that has obviously cost the American people significantly, particularly as it relates to skyrocketing gas prices in an environment where the cost of living was already too high,” Jeffries said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After Jeffries emphasized the importance of “solving our own problems” in America, co-host Rosanna Scotto reminded him that former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden also saw high gas prices during their terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The House of Representatives passed the \u201cSecure America Act\u201d on Tuesday \u2013 a reconciliation bill that will fund ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) through early 2029. The $70 billion proposal now heads to President Donald Trump\u2019s desk for final approval. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vote was 214-212 along party lines, and the legislation passed the Senate last week, with Democrats and Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) voting against it. Rep. Kevin Kiley (I-CA) voted against the legislation, along with all Democrats. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
